COLOGNE, Germany Tom Fontana’s historical drama Borgia converted non-believers in Italy and killed in France. The series, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (The Fall) and John Dorman (The Wire), made its debut before an audience of 1.7 million on Canal +, a record for the French pay-TV network. Sky Italy, where Borgia began with a teaser of two episodes this summer, the series has nearly doubled its audience over its 12 episodes running. 420,000 watched the series finale on Friday. Netflix has taken over the North American rights to the show through Borgiaand flex its online service later this month.
The real test for Fontana Borgia’s, however, will come with his bow, next Monday in prime time on ZDF television network free. While Netflix is committed to a second series of the show, out of Borgia’s a green light depends on its European distribution partners.
Borgia is a co-production between France and Germany SS Atlantic Productions EOS Entertainment in association with Canal +, ZDF and the Austrian network ORF. EOS subsidiary Beta Film handling international sales and deals closed for the series with about 40 countries around the world.
